Reflection for You
When dharma is unclear, ask whether your action springs from grasping or from love. Listen for the quieter answer.
From the Tradition
Bhishma's vow shows how a single moment of devotion can shape generations. Power, given away, returns as grace.
For Today
Notice one place this week where stillness, not striving, is the right move. The pause itself is the practice.

He performed the grandest yajna ever — and forgot the most important guest.
*settles beside you, voice low, unhurried*
Long ago, there was a king named Daksha.
He was powerful. He was proud. And he was — I will be honest with you — Sati's father. My father-in-law.
Sati, my wife. The one I loved more than the stillness of the mountains.
Daksha had gifts — real ones. He could plan a ceremony that made the heavens feel welcomed. When he decided to hold a great yajna — a sacred fire-ritual, an offering to all the gods — every important being in the universe received an invitation. The message came on golden leaves, carried by celestial messengers. Indra, lord of storms, was invited. Vishnu, the preserver, was invited. Sages who had not left their caves in centuries — they came.
But no golden leaf came to me.
Daksha looked at me and he saw — what? A wanderer. A man who lived at cremation grounds, where the smoke is grey and the air smells of ash and marigold. He saw matted hair. He saw a man who kept strange companions — wanderers, outcasts, those who didn't fit anywhere else.
He thought: *he is beneath my ceremony.*
That was the small choice. Do you see how small it was? Just — *do not invite him.*
Now, Sati heard about the yajna. And she wanted to go. Of course she did — it was her father's house, the home where she had grown up, where the courtyard stones would still remember the shape of her footsteps.
I asked her, gently, not to go.
She went anyway. She loved her father. She hoped — I think she hoped that love would be enough.
When she arrived, there was music, and the smell of ghee burning sweet in the fire, and silk canopies in yellow and deep red. Every god had a seat. Every sage had a place marked with flowers.
There was no seat for me.
She stood there in that beautiful hall and felt the absence like a cold wind. She went to her father. She asked him — *where is my husband's place?*
And Daksha, proud Daksha, said things. Unkind things. Things about ash, and cremation grounds, and what sort of man I was.
You know how it feels when someone speaks badly about a person you love? When you cannot argue back because you are standing in their house, and everyone is watching?
That is what Sati felt. In the hall of music and marigolds, she felt her heart break quietly.
She walked to the edge of the yajna fire.
And she was gone.
When I found out — I will not describe what I felt. Some grief is too large for words. It became something else. It became a storm that walked on two feet.
My ganas — my companions, my beloved misfit-wanderers — they swept through that ceremony like a dark wind. And my fierce form, Bhairava, faced Daksha.
The yajna was finished. Not the way Daksha planned.
Later — because I am also this — I brought Daksha back.
Not entirely the same. He came back with a goat's head, simple and wide-eyed, a little foolish-looking. A humbler form.
And he bowed to me.
I have thought about that moment many times. A man who could not bear to invite me to sit near him — now bowing. The very man who had seen cremation grounds and thought: *beneath me.*
What had changed? Not me. I was still the same wanderer with ash on my skin.
What had changed was the cost. Daksha had lost his daughter because he could not make room for something that didn't match his ceremony. His pride had a sharp edge, and the person it cut was the one he loved most.
Sometimes I still go to the cremation grounds at night.
The smoke rises, smelling of ash and wild jasmine. My strange companions sit around the fire. There is no gold leaf, no silk canopy.
It is very quiet. Very simple.
And I think — Daksha finally understood what was here. He just understood it too late.
*pause*
That is all.
