Reflection for You
When dharma is unclear, ask whether your action springs from grasping or from love. Listen for the quieter answer.
From the Tradition
Bhishma's vow shows how a single moment of devotion can shape generations. Power, given away, returns as grace.
For Today
Notice one place this week where stillness, not striving, is the right move. The pause itself is the practice.

Drona asked the princes what they saw. Only Arjuna saw the right thing.
*settles beside you, voice low and warm*
Come close. I want to tell you about a morning when everything was very, very still.
The sun had just come up over Hastinapur — a great city, with tall stone walls and wide dusty courtyards. And in one of those courtyards, all the princes were gathered. Boys, just like you. Some were fidgety. Some were showing off. Some were whispering to each other and getting shushed.
They were waiting for their teacher.
His name was Drona — Guru Drona, the greatest archery teacher in the whole land. When he walked into that courtyard, even the fidgety ones went quiet. He had a long bow over his shoulder and eyes that seemed to see everything at once. The air smelled of dust and fresh grass and the faint smoke of morning fires.
Drona didn't say good morning. He just pointed.
Up in the tall tree at the edge of the courtyard, he had tied a small wooden bird. It sat on a high branch, painted brown, with a tiny painted eye.
"Today," said Drona, "you will shoot that bird's eye. But first — tell me what you see."
He called the princes one by one.
First came Yudhishthira — the eldest, very wise and very honest.
"What do you see, Yudhishthira?"
Yudhishthira looked up carefully. "I see the tree, Gurudev. And the branch. And the bird sitting on the branch. And the blue sky behind it. And the leaves moving a little in the wind."
Drona was quiet for a moment. "Step back," he said softly.
Next came big, strong Bhima, who was never scared of anything.
"What do you see, Bhima?"
Bhima squinted up. "The bird. Its wings. Its feathers. Its little body."
"Step back," said Drona.
One by one, the princes looked. One by one, they stepped back. Each of them could see the bird — but they could see other things too. The sky. The leaves. The branch. The tree.
And then it was Arjuna's turn.
Now — Arjuna, the third prince, was not the biggest. He was not the loudest. But when he picked up his bow, something happened to his face. It went very, very still. Like a pond with no wind on it.
He walked forward. He lifted his bow. He looked up.
"Tell me what you see, Arjuna," said Drona.
Arjuna didn't blink. His voice was soft and sure.
"Only the eye of the bird, Gurudev."
Drona leaned forward just a little. "Only the eye? Nothing else? Not the branch? Not the sky?"
"Nothing else," said Arjuna. "Only the eye."
The whole courtyard went still.
Can you imagine that? Everyone holding their breath. The leaves not even daring to rustle.
Drona smiled — just barely.
"Shoot," he said.
The arrow flew.
*whoosh —*
And it struck.
Right in the eye. Only the eye. The bird's body didn't even move.
Nobody cheered at first. They all just stood there, looking up at that small wooden bird in the tree.
Because they understood — without anyone saying a word — that Arjuna hadn't just been better at looking. He had been better at *not* looking at everything else.
That was his gift. His beautiful, quiet gift.
Drona stood for a long moment, watching his princes. His best lesson had just been taught, and nobody had said anything at all.
*leans a little closer*
But here is the thing I want you to sleep on tonight.
Far away, in the forest — deep, green, full of birdsong — someone *else* had been practicing too. Every single day, with no teacher watching, no courtyard, no other princes.
And tomorrow... I'll tell you about him.
He had never once been Drona's student.
But his arrow?
His arrow flew just as true.
*quietly*
Sleep well, little one.
