Reflection for You
When dharma is unclear, ask whether your action springs from grasping or from love. Listen for the quieter answer.
From the Tradition
Bhishma's vow shows how a single moment of devotion can shape generations. Power, given away, returns as grace.
For Today
Notice one place this week where stillness, not striving, is the right move. The pause itself is the practice.

Krishna asked Duryodhana for five villages. Duryodhana refused even a needle's tip.
*settles in beside you, voice quiet and warm*
Alright, little one. Come closer. This one is important.
You know the Pandavas — Yudhishthira, Bhima, Arjuna, and the twins, Nakula and Sahadeva — five brothers, brave and good. They had been away for a very long time. Thirteen whole years. Living in forests. Hiding in disguise. Do you know how long thirteen years is? It is longer than you have been alive.
But they never stopped hoping.
Because they had been promised. Their kingdom — Indraprastha, a beautiful city with white walls and lotus ponds — would be given back to them when the thirteen years were done.
And the thirteen years *were* done.
So they came home.
Their cousin Duryodhana — the one who had taken their kingdom — he was sitting in his palace. And he said no.
Just like that. No.
So the brothers came to me. And I said, "Let me try."
I am Krishna — you know me. I grew up in Vrindavan, a little forest village, with cows and mud and the sound of the Yamuna river. I am their friend. And sometimes, a friend can say what no one else can say.
I rode my chariot all the way to Hastinapur, the great city. The wheels were loud on the stone roads. The palace doors were tall — taller than ten elephants standing on each other. And inside, it smelled of incense and warm ghee lamps.
I sat before Duryodhana and all the elders. Bhishma — the old grandfather, white-haired, wise — was there. Drona, the teacher. Everyone who mattered.
And I made an offer. A small, small offer.
I said, "Duryodhana. You do not need to return the whole kingdom. Give my friends just five villages. Five small villages — Kushasthala, Vrikasthala, Makandi, Varanavata, and one more place of their choosing. Five brothers, five homes. That is all."
Can you imagine? Five villages. That is *less* than one tiny town.
I thought surely — *surely* — he would say yes.
Duryodhana looked at me. And he laughed.
It was not a happy laugh.
He said, very quietly — and this is the part that made the whole room go cold — he said, "I will not give them enough land to balance on the tip of a needle."
The room was so silent. I could hear a lamp flickering. Just one lamp, going *flick flick flick*.
Then — and I did not plan this, little one, it just *rose* in me — I showed them what I truly am.
For one moment, the elders in that room saw not just Krishna, their guest. They saw something much bigger. Suns and moons and rivers and storms, all turning together, all inside me. Stars that haven't been born yet. Mountains older than memory.
Then I was just Krishna again. Standing there. Straightening my yellow shawl.
And I walked out.
There was nothing left to say. I had offered. He had refused. In his own hall, with his own grandfather watching.
And everyone knew — without me speaking a single word — everyone knew what came next.
So here we are, little one.
Tomorrow, the story moves to a great, flat plain called Kurukshetra — a battlefield, dry and gold, with wind blowing through the tall grass. Eighteen armies. Conch shells crying across the sky like something between a song and a storm.
And somewhere on that field, old Bhishma — the grandfather, the one who heard Duryodhana say no — will pick up his bow.
He loves those boys, the Pandavas. He loves Duryodhana too. He loves all of them.
And he will still choose to fight.
*That* is where we will go next.
But for now —
Five villages. That was all it would have taken.
Five small villages, and their names in the quiet: *Kushasthala. Vrikasthala. Makandi. Varanavata.*
And one more they never got to choose.
*settles back softly*
Sleep now.
